Reiter looked through the sights of his targeting computer. as he Lifted the scope slightly, he looked at the map unfolded in his lap. Taking a knotted length of bootlace, he traced his position to the spot he was looking at.

“Bartonova, I’m going to set my zero to five thousand meters,” he said.

“Where did you get that number 6?” she asked. Reiter grinned.

“I have a knotted bootlace and a map, the knots correspond to kilometers on the map.” The two panzerters posted up on a small hill overlooking Floodgate. Bartonova’s machine was mostly prone, her massive 155-mm sniper rifle taking up most of the ridge. Reiter’s machine leaned over the ridge, bracing for the recoil of the railgun.

“Alrighty then, I’ll adjust my sights too.” Once the shooting started, they’d activate their laser rangefinders, but to laze the enemy now would give away their position. Reiter unbuckled his restraints and stretched.

“And now we wait,” he muttered to himself. This is honestly the hardest part, knowing any minute we’re seconds away from bad things happening.

“Fox 6, Gold 1, we’re in position.” Reiter looked South of the town. From his vantage point, he could see faint lines in grass where gold platoon had walked.

“I got you Gold 1, maintain radio silence.” He twisted sideways, using magnets to hang his map on a blank space in his cockpit. That’ll do for now. He placed magnet markers on the rough position of his infantrymen. Unable to find Gold, he simply used yellow magnets.

“Fox 6, Fox 7, both teams are staged and ready to go.” Adamski’s group hung just outside the range of Union patrols.

“Roger 7, standby for initiation by fires.” Reiter pulled down his targeting computer. Floodgate wasn’t enormous, maybe seven blocks with a small dock area and only a couple four-story buildings. two companies guarded it. One panzerters, one infantry.

“I got six IFVs patrolling the perimeter, with six panzerters posted up on street corners,” Bartonova said. Reiter himself could see six more panzerters kneeling in a parking lot. Probably their night shift, there’s probably more IFVs inside the city.

“Prioritize the Cyclops, they’re weaker than tinhats, but still deadlier than the IFVs.” If I target the offline panzerters, I can stop them from escalating the fight, but that doesn’t reduce the threat from the ones already active.

“Roger, I got the far side, at 1130.” Reiter saw the target in question. If I hit their reserves, they’ll think they’re being attacked from the opposite direction of our actual attack. Reiter furrowed his brow. Careful now, if we get too big brained, it could come back to bite us. It was a calculated risk.

“Roger, I’m targeting their reserves.” We’re here for information, but the priority is survival. “All unit’s standby for opening fire.”

He sighted in his target. A kneeling panzerter with two more slightly behind it. If I line up this shot, I can destroy all three. He squeezed the trigger.

The Lowe kicked hard. The cyclops’s head shattered. Its comrades remained intact. Shot must have bounced.

After a second of delay, Bartonova’s target fell in a smoking wreck.
